Papworth Hospital is the UK’s leading specialist cardiothoracic hospital and the country's main heart and lung transplant centre which treats 98,000 patients each year. It is home to the first successful heart transplant in the UK and one of the world's first beating-heart transplants.

These life changing procedures require critical operating, support and monitoring equipment which demand a continuous power supply. Any loss in power could put lives at risk. Power Control was commissioned to provide a power protection solution to support a highly advanced Siemens Artis Zee multi-purpose medical scanner.

The solution and results

Working in close collaboration with a third party contractor, Nigel Thompson (now of T. Clarke East) Power Control designed and developed two transformer based 250kVA Borri B9000FXS UPS systems in accordance with Siemens parameters, with custom built switchgear, to allow full automatic operation of the facility.

The Borri B9000FXS UPS systems are providing reliable and efficient backup power for critical patient scanning procedures especially during fluoroscopy and full acquisition phases of the Artis Zee.

All of the UPS modifications underwent rigorous analysis and functional testing and were witness tested at the UPS solutions manufacturing facility in Italy, Borri Spa to make sure everything was working as intended before delivery and installation. The UPS units were then further tested beyond their requirements successfully on site once installed.

Now positioned within a GRP external enclosure at the hospital in Cambridge, the two bespoke UPS units have been placed in a parallel redundancy configuration to provide ultimate power protection. This level of safety means that even in the case of a mains disturbance the medical scanner will be fully operational and will not have any detrimental effects to a patient undergoing the treatment.

Not only are the UPS systems providing Papworth Hospital with reliable backup power but the highly advanced input characteristics of the B9000FXS units means that they can also be powered by a single 300kVA standby diesel generator, bringing significant cost saving advantages.

All of the Borri three phase UPS systems come with a unique three-year manufacturer’s warranty, which help to dramatically reduce any unplanned maintenance costs. For added piece of mind, Papworth Hospital is also taking advantage of Power Controls Gold Service maintenance package, which provides 24-hour support and covers labour costs with a guaranteed response time to site.

Why is the B9000FXS so efficient?

Designed and built to the highest manufacturing standards, the Borri B9000FXS online double conversion UPS can achieve up to 95% efficiency and substantial savings in energy costs which is very important in a publically funded domain.

Certified by TÜV NORD Cert as one of the most efficient and resilient transformer based UPS systems on the market, the Borri B9000FXS demonstrate best in class efficiency standards of up to 95%. They have a negligible effect on the mains supply as they come with IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) rectifiers as standard, which provide less than three percent harmonic distortion.
The Borri B9000FXS also boasts:
Three year warranty for peace of mind
Front access for ease of use
Scalable up to 8 units in parallel for changing needs
IGBT rectifier for newer technological advances and faster switching
Smart Online functionality >98% for efficiency
Internal galvanic isolation transformer to increase efficiency but reduce weight and size
THDi <3% with input power factor >0.99 to reduce power distortion and installation costs
