Power Control Backs Up The Science For Kew Gardens

The solution and results

As a botanical discovery and research institution spanning across two UK sites, Kew is known for being an internationally important education facility developing pivotal information about potential uses of plants and fungi.

Having been awarded the UPS maintenance contract in 2019, Power Control carried out an efficiency audit and produced a lifecycle report highlighting that several of the existing UPS systems had reached the end of their working life and would no longer provide reliable power protection.

Due to the nature of the work carried out at Kew, their power protection requirements are vast and any drop in power could result in significant consequences. Technological advancements have led to research laboratories becoming increasingly autonomous and consequently reliant on a reliable source of power, they also require substantial infrastructure to store research data and findings.

Power Control recommended replacing the end of life UPS with a CertaUPS C550 10kVA, a CertaUPS C500 EVO 20kVA and two Borri Ingenio Plus 60kVA systems configured in parallel. These were deployed across both the Kew Gardens and Wakehurst sites and would provide Kew with the power flexibility needed across all of their applications.

The CertaUPS C500 Evo is an online double conversion tower uninterruptible power supply with a selectable input between single phase and three phase. With a small footprint, this UPS system lends itself for industry applications where space is limited. This range is available from 10 – 20kVA and up to 4 units can be paralleled for a fully scalable solution.

The CertaUPS C550 is a single phase, tower UPS system with unity power factor. The C550 can be supplied with internal batteries as standard. External batteries can be added for additional autonomy. Up to three C550s can be connected in parallel as and when required.

The Borri Ingenio Plus is a compact, three phase UPS system that delivers high efficiency and an industry leading low TCO. The range is available from 30kVA – 160kVA making it an ideal choice for small to medium data centre applications.

The company adopts a fully inclusive approach to the delivery, install and commissioning from preliminary consultation and project management through to aftersales and service. The company has its own nationwide team of engineers available for immediate assistance. Its product portfolio is comprehensive and includes systems from 800VA through to 6.4MVA. “If we were to lose power to our facility there would be detrimental consequences with inconceivable outcomes. The research carried out across both sites is key for solving some of the greatest challenges we face such as climate change, biodiversity loss and food security. We need to be able to safely shut down these systems to prevent loss of data and damage to the equipment.

Power Control understood the critical nature of our work and we felt fully confident in their capabilities. Right from the start the entire team were professional, helpful, and knowledgeable and their service consistently reliable."
