Powering A Live Demonstration ECO Facility at KAO Data

While modern transformer-based units do still have their place in applications such as backing up industrial loads, modular UPS technology is quite often the technology of choice for many data centre operators. As advancements continue to be made, the appeal for the modular UPS has increased with the integration of Lithium-Ion battery solutions.

When paired with an uninterruptible power supply, Li-Ion batteries offer a far more efficient option than the traditional VRLA battery sets. They achieve a higher energy density, a reduced overall footprint, reduced maintenance requirement and lower power consumption.

Over the last decade, the industry has seen an 85% drop in the price of integrating lithium-ion batteries into UPS solutions, making it more accessible for end-users. Whilst the initial outlay for lithium-ion batteries may still be more than standard VRLA, the lifespan is far greater.

The solution and results

In a recent project, Power Control worked with modular UPS manufacturing partner, Huawei, to deliver a critical power infrastructure at Kao Data using Huawei UPS5000-H, 1200kW systems and Smart-Li, lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery cabinets. The data suite was opened as a live demonstration facility to showcase the capability, functionality and efficiency of the solution.

Spearheading the energy efficiency and sustainability agenda, Kao Data is slashing emissions across the entire facility. Using 100% renewable energy, the data centre was the perfect premises to showcase the technology.

With the help of Kao Data, Power Control installed the infrastructure for Huawei and brought the solutions to life. The installation was filmed to share real activity and demonstrate the underlining benefits of the high-tech equipment being installed into a high-tech data centre. Following the filming, the demonstration suite was opened up to consultants, contractors, engineers and other interested parties to view both the data centre and Huawei UPS up close.

About the Product

The Huawei UPS 5000-H is the largest and most efficient UPS system in their modular series. It features a high energy density 1200kVA in 1.6m resulting in a 30%-50% reduction in footprint and up to 97% efficiency in double conversion mode. The UPS will operate at 40oC without any deterioration to reliability and has undergone 1400+ reliability tests including short circuit, salt spray, etc.

Due to the modular framework, the UPS5000-H is simple to maintain with hot-swappable modules meaning repairs can be carried out in approx. 5 minutes.

The Huawei UPS5000-H is paired with a Huawei Smart-Li battery solution to provide the ultimate efficient infrastructure. The highly reliable Lithium-Ion Phosphate (LFP) batteries are the most stable of the lithium-ion cell chemistries meaning they are the safest to use alongside a UPS. They also achieve 15 years design life, long cycle lifespans in a smaller footprint and reduced weight solution.

Power Control has been a value-added UPS partner for Huawei since 2016 and works in close collaboration with Huawei’s network energy team to deliver UPS systems, microdata centre solutions and cooling equipment to a wide spectrum of clients across the UK. For added support, we also have full access to Huawei’s head office in Reading and R&D facilities in the UK and its European research centre in Nuremberg.

Due to their very nature and the purpose that they serve, UPS are unlikely to ever become 100% efficient. However, by dropping the transformer, moving to IGBT rectifiers and now moving toward Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery solutions, UPS systems are able to reach upwards of 97% efficiency.”
