Protective Data Centre Efficiency

The solution and results

As the largest full telecoms, IT and communications service provider on the Isle of Man, Manx Telecom required a resilient power protection solution to support its co-located, Tier 3 data centre facility, which is used to service its customers.

Working on behalf of the UK’s leading independent engineering, IT and facilities services business, NG Bailey, Power Control supplied and installed two high efficiency Borri B9000FXS 300kVA UPS systems.

Chosen to work in complete harmony with other equipment and for their best in class performance, efficiency and build quality, the Borri B9000FXS UPS systems were FAT tested and installed within an impressive five week period- on time and in budget.

To ensure that one UPS system always remains operative in the unlikely event of a UPS failure, the B9000FXS UPS units were installed in a parallel redundant configuration, achieving a fully redundant system.

By selecting a UPS solution that complements the other electrical equipment on site, Manx Telecom has benefited from substantial efficiency savings. This coupled with the added efficiency gains from the UPS technology itself has meant that further savings have been achieved through an up to 50% reduction in generator size.

Designed and built to the highest manufacturing standards, the Borri B9000FXS online double conversion UPS can achieve up to 95% efficiency and substantial subsequent savings.

Certified by TÜV NORD Cert as one of the most efficient and resilient transformer based UPS systems on the market, the Borri B9000FXS demonstrate best in class efficiency standards of up to 95%. They have a negligible effect on the mains supply as they come with IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) rectifiers as standard, which provide less than three percent harmonic distortion.

This was a very prestigious project for Power Control and we as a company were privileged to be fully involved throughout the process. We provided relevant technical information at the design stage through to successful contract award. This was followed with the onsite presence of our own engineers for positioning, full battery build, commissioning and load bank testing, whilst working closely with the contractors involved to a tight deadline.
