With the UEFA EURO 2024 in full swing, football fever has gripped fans worldwide. As millions tune in to watch their favourite teams battle it out on the pitch, the spotlight often focuses on the players and the thrilling moments of the game. However, behind the scenes, a complex web of technology ensures that each match runs smoothly and fairly. One of the most significant advancements in recent years is the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, particularly its application in goal-line technology. This and connected ball technology is being used for the first time at a European Championship, starting with the host Germany’s opening fixture against Scotland in Munich. All 10 of the host’s stadiums are equipped with a goal line technology system.

This system ensures that every goal scored is accurately recorded, preventing controversial decisions, and maintaining integrity of the sport. However, the reliability of this technology hinges on an often-overlooked component: Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), a critical piece of equipment which contributes to the smooth functioning of football matches.

The role of VAR Goal Line Technology

Goal-line technology is a specialised component of the VAR system designed to determine whether the ball has completely crossed the goal line. Using high speed cameras and advanced sensors, the system provides instant feedback to referees, eliminating any doubt about the legitimacy of a goal. This technology has been a game changer, ensuring that critical match outcomes are decided accurately and fairly.

The vulnerabilities of Technology used in Football

While VAR goal-line technology is highly sophisticated, it is not immune to technical issue. Power interruptions however brief, can disrupt the functionality of these systems. A sudden power outage during a match could lead to the technology failing at a crucial moment, potentially resulting in incorrect decisions, and affecting the outcome of the game. This is where uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) come in to play.

What is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS)?

A UPS is a device that provides backup power to electronic systems in the event of a power failure. It acts as a bridge between the primary power source and the technology, ensuring a continuous power supply. Depending on their topology – line interactive or online double conversion, UPS systems are designed to kick in immediately or switch the power source to an already running UPS system, when they detect a power interruption, providing enough power to keep the technology running until the primary power source is restored or a backup generator takes over.

The Importance of UPS for VAR Goal Line Technology

UPS systems ensure that VAR goal-line technology remains operational without interruption, even during power outages. This continuous operation is crucial for maintaining the integrity of match decisions. Downtime in VAR systems can lead to delays in the game, affecting the flow and experience for players and spectators. UPS systems minimise downtime, allowing matches to proceed smoothly.

Following an incident that happened in 2022 during the Leeds United vs Arsenal game, FIFA issued a letter to all premiership clubs outlining the requirements for an uninterruptible power supply to back up the VAR and Goal Line equipment.

Power outages can also lead to data loss or corruption and damage to sensitive electronic equipment. UPS system prevent this by ensuring that all data related to goal-line decisions is securely saved and accessible, prolong the lifespan of the equipment and reduce maintenance costs.

Other Applications of UPS Systems in Football Stadiums

Beyond supporting VAR goal line technology, UPS systems play a crucial role in other critical applications within football stadiums. They ensure that essential systems such as lighting, public address systems, access control, and electronic scoreboards remain operational during power outages, preventing disruptions that could affect the safety and experience of both players and spectators.

Additionally, UPS systems support the operation of security systems, including surveillance cameras and emergency communication networking, which are vital for maintaining safety and order during matches.

In press boxes and media centres, UPS systems ensure that journalists and broadcasters can continue to deliver live coverage without interruptions, preserving the quality of the viewer experience worldwide. These multifaceted applications highlight the indispensable nature of UPS systems in maintaining the seamless operation of modern football stadiums.

As EURO 2024 captivates audiences across the globe, the importance of robust and reliable power solutions like UPS systems in the seamless operation of football matches becomes increasingly clear. Investing in these systems is not just about preventing power outages; it’s about preserving the spirit and fairness of the beautiful game.

Power Control is backed by three decades of experience in specifying, installing, commissioning, and maintaining UPS systems in stadiums nationwide. Our UPS systems can already be found supporting critical equipment in a number of UK Premiership and Championship stadiums, and since FIFA issued the letter Power Control has surveyed and installed many UPS for this specific application.
